Authentic Dried Horopito - New Zealand's Hidden Spice

Horopito is a native plant of New Zealand, known scientifically as "Pseudowintera colorata." It is also fondly called New Zealand pepper tree. It's peppery flavor has made it an addition to Kiwi culinary scene.

Add a unique and robust flavor to your meals that can’t be replicated with ordinary spices. It's particularly popular as a seasoning for meats, vegetables, seafood, sauces, salads, soups, stews and rubs, adding a spicy, bold flavor. It can also be used in curries and gravies, fruit, or any food of your choice.

Elevate Your Dishes

Seasoning for Meats: Dried Horopito can be used as a rub for meats such as beef, lamb, or venison. Its spicy, slightly peppery flavor complements  particularly well. Just rub the meat with a mixture of any other desired herbs before cooking.

Spicing Up Seafood: It can add a delightful twist to seafood dishes. Sprinkle over fish fillets, shrimp, or scallops before grilling or baking.

Flavoring Sauces and Gravies: Incorporate into sauces and gravies for an extra layer of flavor. It works well in cream-based sauces, tomato sauces, or even in a traditional gravy.

In Salad Dressings: Create unique salad dressings. Its peppery taste can enhance vinaigrettes or creamy dressings.

Soups and Stews: Add to soups and stews for a subtle, peppery warmth. It pairs well with ingredients like mushrooms, tomatoes, and root vegetables.

Vegetable Dishes: Sprinkle it over roasted or grilled vegetables. It particularly complements earthy flavors like those of potatoes, pumpkin, and kumara (sweet potato).

Homemade Bread and Crackers: Infuse your homemade bread, scones, or crackers with Horopito for a unique twist. It can be mixed into the dough before baking.

Infusing Oils: Create yummy oil by steeping the dried leaves in a good quality olive oil. This oil can then be used for dressings, marinades, or as a finishing oil.

In Marinades: Use it in marinades to impart its flavor to meats or vegetables before cooking.

Homemade Seasoning Blends: Combine with other dried herbs and spices to create your own seasoning blends. It pairs well with garlic, onion, and herbs like rosemary and thyme.

It is a versatile culinary ingredient for a wide range of dishes.

Horopito is not just a culinary delight but also known for its potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Keep it away from strong-smelling foods or spices as herbs can absorb odors, which may alter their original flavor and aroma.

Using this to control intestinal yeast overgrowth

Learned about horopito watching Byron Herbalist on YouTube. Bought this, blended it in to a fine powder and made capsules out of it. Works great. Have not yet used it in the kitchen, but plan to.
