Nutmeg carries a rich historical heritage due it medicinally, culinary and magical uses. Historically, the origin of this phenomenal spice is associated with Banda Island (Spice Island) of Indonesia. Indonesia is the world biggest producer of these "Grains of Heaven" followed by Moluccas, Guatemala, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Grenada, Malaysia and Sri Lanka etc.
Harvesting and Cultivation
Nutmeg spice is obtained from the seeds of tropical evergreen trees of the family Myristicaceae. After seven to nine years of Jaiphal planting, it readies for its first harvesting. Typically, the peak harvesting season of MyristicaFragrans is from July to August. The prolonged production process and low yield per tree make it one of the most expensive spices.
Texture and shape
Nutmeg is greyish-brown egg-shaped spices with furrowed surfaces. These peach-like granular fruits are small in size with a diversity of robust flavours and potent aroma.
